In 1974, in their early twenties, Joe and Linda Schaefer opened their first neighborhood bar in West St. Paul on the corner of Annapolis and Stryker, calling it the Ann-Ker Bar.  Joe would bartender and Linda would wait tables and together they began what would become a lifelong career of owning and operating bars and restaurants.

In 1978, the Schaefer’s opened their second bar in St. Paul on Jefferson Avenue, called the Frontier Bar & Eatery. There they expanded to a larger bar with restaurant, video games, pool tables and indoor volleyball court.

The Frontier became very popular for its’ neighborhood atmosphere, rockin’ late nights and also for its indoor volleyball play.

Many leagues, teams and customers alike enjoyed playing and watching through the huge glass windows. The Frontier Bar became home of our famous “Italian Fries”, which are still on our menu today.

Then in 1984 Joe and Linda bought the location which is now Moose Country. And with the help of family and friends, Joe’s dad led the team to extensively remodel the Moose Country location.  On August 9, 1984 Pony’s American Bar, opened its’ doors for business.  It brought a fun, casual happy hour and dining experience along with late night dancing to Lilydale.

The Schaefer’s expanded to four locations in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Burnsville and Lilydale in the late 80’s, all called Jose’s “Cheeks and Cheers”.  The atmosphere at Jose’s was casual, fun and sometimes even wild. The Schaefer’s sold three of the four Jose’s, keeping what is now Moose Country. Then, in 1997 they opened the Wild Onion on Grand Avenue.Since then, Moose Country & Wild Onion have been neighborhood bars and restaurants serving cold beer, hot food and a damn good time late night! Over the years the Moose has always been a family effort.  And now Joe and Linda’s son Ryan has joined the management team at Moose country.
So come in and enjoy our atmosphere, hospitality and service with a smile.  We welcome you for happy hour, dinner and dancing sometime soon!
